For many years Flat Green Bowls has been played in Grampound. By repute, bowling was popular in the village in Tudor times. As a certainty, there were two active greens supported in the 1900’s and by factual record a combined club, affiliated to the C.C.B.A. was founded in 1927. So it is one of the oldest clubs in Cornwall and in 2002 we celebrated our 75th anniversary.
The fine new Club House and 6 rink green of County standard (provided with grant assistance from English Sport and the Foundation for Arts and Sport) is situated in the centre of the village, which is half-way between Truro and St Austell on the A390 road. The club enjoys a beautiful situation in the Fal valley, situated in the Recreation Ground, close to the village hall and school.
Open to men and women, the club enjoys a proud reputation for friendliness and keenness. Currently the men have a team in the hotly contested Division One of the Central Division League, whilst the ladies have a fine reputation, there being several County players and holders of local and County trophies. Matches are played throughout the season from April to October and these include National, County and local competitions, plus visits from Touring Teams and friendly matches. In winter, short mat bowls are played in the Club House. Currently there are approximately 60 members. Membership is drawn from the village and from a wide area around, including St Austell. New members are always welcome, experienced and beginners alike. The disabled and youngsters are catered for particularly, the latter from the age of 12 up to 18 having free membership. Qualified coaches are to hand to give tuition and basic equipment is available for beginners. Annual membership fees are amongst the lowest in the county being under £30 per annum.
This is a long established, well regarded and well equipped club which welcomes new members, both young and not so young.
