The Problem
The Village is dying. It is rapidly losing shops (3 in recent years) services (the garage), and employers (the tannery). The absence of a bypass has stagnated future development, as access onto the main road is very difficult at peak travel times. There is little wealth in an area where wages are low and house prices are rising rapidly. Few young local families can afford to live in an area where many buildings are listed, and so the futures of the playgroup and school are threatened.
The Solution
Grampound still has a lot of spirit which can help it bring about regeneration. It has a lively community, an excellent school, a thriving newsletter (The Grampound Times), a football team, the bowls club, and the annual carnival. With the new sports and recreational facilities that will be available on completion of the new hall, there are many opportunities for the village to prosper again. People still want to live and work in the village if opportunities are provided for them to do so.
The Help We Need
A bypass is the best solution to our biggest concerns. If, as it appears, a by-pass is not likely for the next ten years, then immediate alternative action is required to save the village.
This exercise has highlighted what our community (you) feel we need to keep the village alive and thriving well into the 3rd millennium. These are highlighted in the box top left and described in greater detail in the following pages. We all want to live and thrive in a vibrant community. With the help of local partners, the Cornwall Rural Community Council, Restormel Borough Council, and the Restormel Regeneration Partnership, and most of all, the village itself, we hope to achieve the objectives outlined in this document. |
