Heritage, Tourism and Environmental Issues

THE PARISH

The Town Hall needs structural work to keep it safe for the future

An increase in tourism would benefit local businesses, but is currently stalled by traffic/parking issues

We are surrounded by beautiful countryside but need better access to it

Regeneration of the village will encourage visitors and bring extra revenue to local businesses

Adoption as part of the National Cycle Network would optimise opportunities for grant funding

The Problem

Grampound is an ancient village with a long and colourful history set within beautiful countryside. Unfortunately nobody knows this but the residents!
The village is divided on the issue of tourism, with half believing it will benefit the local businesses/economy and half wishing to keep the village free of tourists. The major obstacle is the lack of parking and additional traffic that would be generated.
The village has a large number of sites of historical importance. Due to lack of awareness and funds, some of these are falling into disrepair and we are in danger of losing the Town Hall unless funding can be sourced for repair work to stabilise the structure.
Other features, such as the tannery, could be turned into tourist attractions if other infrastructure was in place:

  • Better Road Access (generated by a bypass)
  • Access by Other Forms of Transport (The National Cycle Network)
  • More Car Parking Facilities
  • Grant Funding for Development as Heritage Sites
  • Better Advertising
  • Footpaths to Encourage Walkers
  • Guided Tours of the Village
