The Problems
Grampound has a small but active school. For the school to remain viable, it needs a steady population of children from the village to sustain class sizes.
The lack of suitable housing for young people in the village has been highlighted elsewhere in this report, and needs to be addressed so that there are children who will need a local school in the future.
Traditionally in the village, the playschool has provided a link into the school, so that children are already familiar with their surroundings and classmates once they start attending full-time. This cannot happen unless the new village hall is completed. Since the old hall is unfit for use, children are beginning to go other villages' facilities and make new friends elsewhere. A playschool and day care facility here in the village is essential to keep the school alive.
Adult Education facilities do not currently exist in the village, although many people would be interested in doing a variety of evening classes.
Solutions Again, we need the new hall, with facilities for a playschool and day nursery. We need to investigate the provision of a registered childminding service in the village.
Contact has already been made with the WEA (Worker's Education Alliance) who provide adult education, and a member of the regeneration committee reports regularly on upcoming schemes.
A series of taster courses will be held in the village, and these will be publicised via the community website and Grampound Times magazine.
Feedback from these will be used to create a programme of courses in the village.
