A Rainbow is a member of Girlguiding UK (formerly known as The Guide Association) and is the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women in this country. It has about 700,000 members. There are similar Associations throughout the world and Girlguiding UK is a founding member of the world organisation that unites them. Rainbows make a simple promise that they share with other members around the world. Rainbows are relatively new to Girlguiding UK; they began in 1987, whereas Guiding began in 1910. The forerunner had been the scouts which had been founded by Robert Baden-Powell in 1908. Baden-Powell asked his sister Agnes to look after the Guiding organisation, which she did until 1918 when Olave, Baden-Powell's wife, became Chief Guide. We are the first step on the Guiding ladder and girls join us at 5 years and leave at 7 to go on to, we would hope, join Brownies. Rainbows is all about having fun. We do this through various activities including craft, singing, stories, outings and visitors. If you have a hobby, skill or job you would like to share with us we would be delighted to hear from you as we are always on the lookout for new ideas. |
