About Grampound

The ancient seal of Grampound is below

Grampound with Creed lies in the centre of Cornwall, sheltered in the beautiful valley of the River Fal. Settled since prehistoric times, from within the ancient parish of Creed and the old manor of Tybesta, Grampound grew as the main crossing place on the Fal, a focus for travellers and traders moving betwen west Cornwall and England. Thus Grampound became one of the most important towns in Cornwall with a rich and vibrant history. The main A390 road now runs through the town, bringing with it the problems of traffic, but Grampound remains a beautiful location with a rich community life and spirit.

GRAMPOUND HERITAGE PROJECT
Press Release Monday 7th April

Fascinating images for Grampound’s past unearthed

The newly created Grampound Community Heritage Project has started on the exciting task of capturing images of Grampound’s heritage.

A small but dedicated team of volunteers are slowly unearthing photographs from all over Grampound, scanning them and creating a community based archive for all to access as part of the heritage centre.

“ We have already found some fascinating images of the village and villagers, some of which will be put to use straightaway with the mini project taking place at our local School” said volunteer Peter Wootton.

The centre is being designed by the community for the community allowing all to celebrate the long and intriguing past this village has. It will contain a searchable database of images and oral history recordings relating to Grampound and interpretation charting the village’s history from Roman times to today.

“I’m really pleased so many local villagers are letting us borrow and scan their family photos, but more are needed so if you have any photos lurking in your family albums of Grampound village, people or events please get in touch so we can add them to the archive. Every image counts!” said Liz Chard the project co-ordinator.

More volunteers are needed so if you have time to spare and want to find out more contact Liz on 07901600469
