About Grampound

The ancient seal of Grampound is below

Grampound with Creed lies in the centre of Cornwall, sheltered in the beautiful valley of the River Fal. Settled since prehistoric times, from within the ancient parish of Creed and the old manor of Tybesta, Grampound grew as the main crossing place on the Fal, a focus for travellers and traders moving betwen west Cornwall and England. Thus Grampound became one of the most important towns in Cornwall with a rich and vibrant history. The main A390 road now runs through the town, bringing with it the problems of traffic, but Grampound remains a beautiful location with a rich community life and spirit.

Welcome to the 1st Grampound Guides

We have a thriving Guide Unit in Grampound, with approximately 24 Guides and four leaders, Julie Blayney, Sylvia Mckay, Amanda Edge and Sam Shearing.  We meet at Grampound School and Community Hall on a Friday, but for more details of time and day please call 01726 882877.

When we began in April 2006 we had several Guides who joined us who were 13.  With Guides being for girls age 10 – 14 we are now finding as they get to 14 they still have lots they want to achieve as Guides and want to stay on, so in September these Guides will all work in one group as a Senior Patrol, enabling the younger Guides still to become Patrol leaders and seconds.  If we have enough staying or anymore wanting to join us at an older age there is a possibility of starting Rangers. This will run alongside Guides but the girls will work more independently.

At present we have 4 patrols:

PENGUINS
I am the leader of the Penguin Patrol, Patrols are sections of the Guide unit and are groups we work in, and we have a Patrol leader and a second.
My patrol is made up of me - Laura, Carrie as my second, Holly, Bryony, Tannis and Lucy, we have worked together on Go for it Chocolate and outdoor cooking. Most of all in Guides I have enjoyed the canoeing.

DOLPHINS

In Guides there is a Patrol called Dolphins. There are 6 people. 1 = Patrol leader and 1 = Patrol seconder and 4 other people.  Patrol leader is Lauren and Patrol Second is Zena. As a Patrol we work for Go For Its and badges.

ELEPHANTS
We have 5 people in our Patrol; we really enjoy being in a group together. I am Jade the Patrol leader and Charlotte is Patrol second. As a Patrol we try to complete Go For Its, these go in your G-File, a G-File is like a mini folder that contains lots of information about Guides, it is given to you when you start Guides. Also you get a badge book, which gives you information about Interest badges you can work for.

STARFISH
We have 6 people in our Patrol, Amber is our Patrol Leader and Rosie is our Patrol Second.  We work together as a group and have had great fun organising activities for our parties go for it.

At Grampound Guides we mostly wear rugby shirts and gilets:-

We put our badges on our gilets, these include our Patrol badges, o ur Promise badge and Interest badges.

We take part in lots of different activities, both outside things like Outdoor cooking, Archery, wall climbing and canoeing and indoor activities have included a Fashion Show of outfits we made from recycled materials, a fundraising evening for Children in Need. We have made cake decorations from icing and been to a pottery and decorated our own plate.

This term we had a talk on recycling by Richard Bowers, a visit from the R.N.L.I who discussed water safety, a visit to Porthpean Outdoor centre, we have worked in groups and individually to gain interest badges and 9 of the Guides took part in the Royal Cornwall Show Messenger Service.
