An exciting community dance and music project has been happening in Grampound. Arta! (which means again or encore in Cornish) has involved workshops in Cornish dance and music, aiming for the creation of a village band (Grampound and surrounding villages) which could play for processions, for dancing or even for pub sessions.
The workshops were organised by
www.cumpas.co.uk in collaboration with local people who are already involved in Cornish music and dance.
Hilary Coleman from CUMPAS says: ‘We are often meeting people in Cornwall who admit to having an instrument but not “really playing it” and we are very keen to encourage them to dust off that instrument and have a go! Our approach to music making is fun and for all ages, abilities and instruments. We have worked with french horn players and those who only play the spoons!’
The Grand Finale of the project is on Sunday 13th December, which will be a tea treat celebration with music and dance in Grampound village hall followed by a lantern procession to Creed Church for the annual Christingle service.
Grand Tea Treat Finale Sunday 13th December:
3pm Celebration in Grampound Hall
5.30pm Lantern procession
(musicians will be playing the Grampound Wassail)
6pm Christingle Service at Creed Church
The whole project has been part-funded by FEAST a funding programme which aims to bring people together to take part and animate local celebrations and cultural life in Cornish villages and towns.
