SEPTEMBER: After the rather smaller but just as successful Carnival this month our members soon got into their stride at the monthly meeting by having a hands-on demonstration of spinning and weaving given by AMANDA, one of our members who is an expert in this craft - some of us were somewhat ham-handed at first but eventually turned out some quite creditable efforts. All in all it was a very good evening.
At the Annual Scrabble Competition held at our County Head Office our representative for Grampound did not win but put up a good show and said it was all good fun.
There are also many outings to be considered this month such as “Dowsing”, “Sugar and Marzipan Christmas Decorations”, “Abseiling” (an extremely popular event), “Shopping in Exeter”, “Panto in Plymouth”, and so on, as well as many Christmas lunches to be booked.
OCTOBER: The business of this month being concluded at our monthly meeting we were all thoroughly entertained by Mrs. Jill Anstey, her subject being entitled “Take 3 Women – a Shepherdess, a Fishwife and a Convict”. It was doubly interesting as all these women came from Cornwall. The time flew as indeed did the questions afterwards - Mrs, Anstey certainly needed and enjoyed the refreshments after her talk.
October is always a full month as it incorporates the Annual General Meeting held at the Hall For Cornwall - needless to say there is always a full house with representatives from all over Cornwall; including two of our ladies attending who reported on the opening announcements. Adoption of the Annual Report and Financial Statement etc.
After lunch our guest speaker, the Right Honourable Baroness Dean of Thornton-le-Fylde, gave a most lively talk entitled “A Lady in the House of Lords”. This gave us all a new aspect on the workings of the House and she received a very warm ovation at the end of her entertaining speech.
With the singing of the National Anthem it must be said another most successful meeting ended.
Still in October our Harvest Festival was held in the Town Hall - a super buffet and social evening.
NOVEMBER: After our preliminary business for the month ended we settled down to listening to Mrs. Jean Jarvis showing us how to make gift boxes, here again it was a hands-on demonstration, causing no little hilarity but with eventually some very good results. All in all it was a very happy evening.
DECEMBER: Our meeting at this time is taken up with our Christmas Party with games, quizzes, etc. Also a competition always takes place, this year being a Christmas Decoration for the table. Of course there is always a super Christmas Supper, with a lucky dip for everyone before leaving.
To complete the Season we would like to wish everyone a great time at Christmas and a Very Happy New Year.
With Best Wishes from all the members of the Women’s Institute.
