Calor Village of the Year Competition – the village, unfortunately, did not win the competition, but Members wish to place on record their thanks to all those who were there on the day of the judges’ visit. Around 50 residents were present in all, which was a splendid turnout. The Town Crier was a particular hit and the ladies of the WI had made their room look very homely and their refreshments were much appreciated. Members were keen to learn from the experience, ready for next year’s competition!
Flowerbeds – we are going to try something new, in the flowerbeds, for next year. Instead of the usual busy lizzies, we are going for a more naturalistic approach, with long-flowering annuals (e.g. love-in-a-mist, poppies, daisies, etc.). Let us know what you think of the display.
Notice Board – the village is now the proud possessor of a new notice board, thanks to the good offices of Mr Jeremy Spires, who had the board made for the cost of the materials only. It is proposed to erect it outside the school and should prove a valuable resource.
Bus Shelter – following receipt of a petition, from residents in Old Hill, Members have set funds aside, which together with a grant from Cornwall County Council, will provide a shelter by the block of garages, at the foot of Old Hill. We are currently trying to ascertain ownership of the land and when this has been confirmed, official application for the CCC grant will be made and planning permission sought.
Town Hall Heritage Centre – an architect, Mr David Wilkins, has been appointed to work on the plans for the proposed centre and these are expected shortly. The working party, tasked with progressing this initiative, is in the process of obtaining costs for the work. When that is to hand, an application for funding will be made to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Local Produce Market – 90% of replies to the recent village questionnaire wanted to see this progressed. Much of the groundwork has been done, what is needed now is someone (or a small group of people) to organise it. If anyone is interested or would like more information, please contact the Parish Clerk (contact details below).
Village Wind Turbine – a suggestion was made at the Parish Meeting, for the village to have its own wind turbine. As a result, Mr Neil Farrington attended the September Meeting of the Council and gave Members a brief insight into what is involved. As we all know fossil fuel is a finite resource, and is rapidly running out. Costs, to individual households and businesses, are soaring, with a corresponding interest in insulation and renewable energy, e.g. solar panels. Mr Farrington explained that a single wind turbine, like the one on the A30, would cost circa £700,000 (grants are available) and provide sufficient power for 600 homes. Grampound has 250 homes, so this is an area where co-operation with surrounding parishes could be of mutual benefit. Obviously, the Parish Council does not have £700,000, but Mr Farrington suggested that residents could purchase shares and any excess could be sold to the national grid as profit for the community. There is much to think about and discuss and as a first step Mr Ben Lundie, a solicitor specialising in such matters, will attend the Council’s October meeting. If there is any further merit in the idea, it is then proposed to hold a Public Meeting.
Footpaths –
Grampound to Golden Footpath - a donation of £500 had been made by the Ramblers’ Association, towards the provision of a footbridge over the River Fal, for which Members were extremely grateful.
Mill Lane to Trevillick – a small Working Party (Paul Brewer, Dave Carne and Peter Holness), have refixed the railing at the Mill Lane end of the footpath, thereby making walking it that much easier. Our thanks to the intrepid three.
