Grampound Carnival

As I write this it’s difficult to appreciate the fact that Christmas is only 6 weeks away. The sun is out, basking sharks are off the coast and it’s November for Heaven’s sake! Yet here we are planning for Carnival events at Christmas time and looking forward to a time of change as far as our Committee is concerned.

As I mentioned in the last issue, your Committee will need all your support and offers of help in 2007 if we are to continue our great Carnival tradition. After many successful years in charge of the finances Joe Fryer will be standing down as Treasurer at the AGM in January. I’m sure that everyone in Grampound is appreciative of the dedication and immense energy that Joe has put into being Treasurer. He leaves a healthy bank balance despite the washout and subsequent loss of income on Carnival day. This is due to his sound financial stewardship and good planning at a time when Carnival costs have rocketed due to increases in insurance premiums and the demands of the health and safety brigade. We all owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Well done Joe – enjoy the rest!

As I mentioned in the last issue, we have gone through the whole of 2006 without a Secretary and I must thank the Committee for sharing out the secretarial jobs this year. I too am standing down as Chairman so it really will be all change for 2007. In order to carry on our Carnival tradition it’s up to you, the residents of Grampound, to come along and show your support for the Carnival at the AGM on Tuesday 23 rd January at 7.15 p.m. in the new Hall. We need people willing to fill these 3 key posts and new members to bolster the Committee for 2007. I’m confident that we can rise to the occasion and have another great Carnival in 2007. See you at the AGM!

On to Yuletide events and the Christmas Lights Competition takes place again this year with the judging during the evening of Tuesday 19th th December. Prizes will once more be awarded in these classes:

  • Class 1 – Best home window display

  • Class 2 – Best Home display

  • Class 3 – Best Business premises display

Our light show seems to go from strength to strength and we are all looking forward to another great display.

Finally, can I say how much I have enjoyed being Carnival Chairman for the last 4 years. Despite starting with a cancellation and ending with a washout (!) I feel that it was an honour to have the chance to be so involved with such a great Grampound tradition and it has been a time I will look back on with a lot of fond memories. The Committee has worked very hard during this time and I would like to thank them and everyone else in Grampound for their vital support for Carnival over the last few years. On behalf of the Carnival Committee, may I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2007.

Bill Collins (Chairman)
