Ron Hicks, President of the Grampound Bowling Club tells me that this will be his last report on behalf of the club, and that future reports will be prepared by KEITH BLAKE . As far as I know Ron intends to remain on the Grampound Times Management Committee and we can look forward to Keith’s offering in Edition 44 Spring 2007. Meanwhile here is the club’s report for Christmas 2006………

The bowling green played very well during the season past although a few showers of rain would have been very beneficial, as due to the very dry and sunny weather the green tended to look brown at times.
In preparation for the new 2007 season the green has already been scarified, slitted, over seeded and top dressed, and my thanks to the club members who did the work.
The 2006 season commenced with ALF PHILLIPS opening the green and this was quickly followed by a Coffee Morning arranged by the ladies. A practice session followed during the next week.
The ladies gained 3 rd place in the Rippon League, and Date and Evening teams turned in improved performances over the previous year. In the County Competitions JEAN RYAN, GILL AISH and JOAN THOMAS reached the County Quarter Final and were Divisional Runners Up. GILL AISH played in a County South West League, JOAN THOMAS represented Cornwall in the John’s team ands South West League. In our Club’s own competitions, GILL AISH won the Stewart and the Langsford Trophies; KATH VENNARD won the Tippett Shield and JENNIFER ANDREWS and GILL AISH WON THE Thomas Pairs Cup.
It was with much sadness that during the year we lost VERA WEBB. Vera was a previous Secretary and with her wealth of experience was a great help to the present ladies secretary.
Members also mourned the passing of another previous club member MARIE JO JAMES.
We regret the loss to our club of three members; MIRIAM MOWLAM is moving to Dorset, KATH VENNARD to Par and will be playing for Fowey and PAT CHASE is going to the newly affiliated club at Mevagissey. We wish them well. Happily however, we can welcome new members this year who are BARBARA NICHOLAS, JOYCE BARRETT, MARINA JENKIN, JENNY IDDLES and KAREN GOODMAN. New members are always welcome here.
In the Mens competitions the Grampound A Team enjoyed an excellent season gaining promotion to Division I for the 2007 season. 18 games were played and 16 were won against just 2 loses. This put the team into Second position in the league with 66 points, just 2 points behind the winners. The Grampound B Team played 14 matches in Division 3, winning 5 and losing 9 to achieve a total of 29 points. Our young player DAVID IDDLES was runner-up in the Divisional Under 18’s Singles Competition held at the Imerys Club. In the Grampound Clubs Mens competitions FRANK WAY won the Stewart Cup, DAVID IDDLES and DONALD FORD won the Benevolent Pairs and AUDRY WAY and TERRIE BIGGS won the mixed Pairs. The Mogford Cup brought a two rinks to one victory for the men over the ladies and Club Day winners were KATH VENNARD, DONALD FORD, KEN HANCOCK and TERRIE BIGGS.
At this time of the year we resort to our Short Mat game which takes place in our pavilion on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 7pm and 9pm. Anyone interested in playing is welcome and for newcomers shoes and bowls are available for use.
Club members have again decided not to have a Christmas Carols evening around the village, but that they will again make a Christmas Gift from their funds to charity in the true spirit of Christmas. The Merlin Project that has been so much in the public eye during this year is to benefit from members generosity with a gift of £200.
The next Grampound Times Bowling report will be made in the Spring 2007 edition of the paper at which time our members will be looking forward to good weather and happy bowling hours, but for now may I on behalf of all of them wish you the compliments of this Christmas Season and the blessings of a happy and prosperous New Year.
RON HICKS
President Grampound Bowling Club.
