GRAMPOUND’S CHURCHES OF ST. NUN & ST. CRIDA

It is with sadness that I open this report by recording the death of an energetic member of our Churches  DAVID SCHOLAR.   Besides being a member of the Parochial Church Council David played the organs at both St. Nun’s and also the Parish Church at Creed for the monthly Evensong Service.   We miss his cheerful presence since his passing.

In mid June a Service was held at Probus Church for a Confirmation and Re-licensing of Parochial Visitors and Service Leaders within the Team.   The Service was taken by our new Bishop, Bishop Tim.   He gave a lively and enjoyable Service and we hope to see more of him in the future, although I am sure he is going to be very popular.

For those who are not sure, Parochial Visitors are available at all reasonable times to talk over, or just listen, to anyone, churchgoer or not, who has a problem they cannot solve.   The Visitor may not have the answer either, but will probably know someone who has, or can help.   Our Visitor is DORCAS CUDDEFORD.

Service Leaders are able to take Services, which do not require a Lay Reader or Vicar, parts of the Service being altered to enable them to keep within their capability.    In this Parish our Service Leader is  DAVID BANNISTER.   David takes the Morning Service at 11am on the fourth

Sunday of the month, and Evensong at 6pm on the second Sunday.    He does not deliver Sermons but occasionally our Rector  ANDREW WADE  joins for this.   Both Services have accompanied sung hymns and chants.   Come along and hopefully enjoy the experience.

Research carried out by TINA TYLER for the Heritage Centre has found that the Revd. Andrew de Brune, who was Rector of Creed from 1311 to 1314 was the founder of Oriel College, Oxford.   In those days Rectors would cover several Parishes and take the Tythes as their income, employing Curates to take Services and run the Parishes.

Many thanks to all those involved in the Open Gardens Day in June, particularly DELLA STOVELL and  ALISON OCONNOR  who made the arrangements.   It was a great event carried out in Summer sunshine and  over  £900 was raised for the Churches.    This will now go towards the costs for new electrical and heating installation work to be carried out at Creed, and for which we are also hoping to attract some Grant Aid.

Your Churches will as usual have a stall at this years Carnival Day Fete.    Donations for the stall of fruit, vegetables and similar items will be gratefully accepted, and your patronage of the stall at the Fete will be very much appreciated.

There has been much concern expressed recently about Creed Churchyard due to the fact that most available ground has been used.   A field to the north of the present Churchyard has been donated by the Trewithen Estate as an extension.    A Planning Application has met with some disappointment as the Environment Agency will not allow burials within 30 metres of a stream, and we have such a stream underground down our north boundary on the extension land, however, up to twelve burials can be accommodated there as need arises.   A level survey has been carried out to help in the design of the necessary water diversion.   An estimate obtained for the design proved to be £3500, far more than the Church has spare at the present time, particularly as the cost of the actual works would then have to be met.   We have also considered the areas around the Church building which appear to be clear areas, but the high level above the Church floor indicate that burials have taken place there in the years since the Church was built in the 12th century, so although over burying is allowed after 70 years, it is not desirable to risk disturbing previous burials.   We will continue to explore alternative schemes.

SUNDAY THE 27TH SEPTEMBER HAS BEEN DESIGNATED
“ BACK TO CHURCH DAY “

Throughout the whole country those who have drifted away from Church attendance are being encouraged to come back on that day   Locally we shall be giving out personal invitations to those we know.   To those folk we do not know or who have not been regular attendees at Services the message is the same

“Please come back to Church on the 27th September.”

Our Services that day will be:

At St. Nun’s                  8.45am Holy Communion
                                    10.30am Parish Praise

At St. Crida’s               11.00am  Morning Service

DAVID BANNISTER
