GRAMPOUND CARNIVAL – Looking Back

To the justified anguish of my family I must admit to being something of a Jackdaw.   ( I can’t bear to throw anything away )  after all you never know when it might be useful again!   That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.   Again, from the lower reaches of one of my files I found a paper detailing the exploits of Grampound’s Carnival Royalty back in 1984 – 85, and its worth reading again today, particularly as this is the “Grampound Times “ Carnival 2009 Edition.

I well remember that back at that time our young ladies were more inclined to volunteer to serve the village as Carnival Royalty.   My piece of paper does not disclose who was Carnival Queen that year and who were Attendants  -  and it doesn’t matter because they were all volunteers, but the Royal Party of that time, and who even these years later, can be offered  Congratulations! consisted of MISSES ELIZABETH PIPE, CHRISTINE PIPE, SHARON TULLETT.

As our Royalty they visited during the year many other Carnivals, advertising Grampound Carnival and winning awards for themselves.
At St. Columb Queen of Queens Contest they won 1st for Queen, 1st for Attendants, 1st for Group.
At Wadebridge Queen of Queens Contest they took 1st for Attendants and 2nd for Group.
At Camelford Queen of Queens Contest they gained a 3rd Prize for Queen.
At Little Petherick Queen of Queens Contest it was 2nd for Queen, 2nd for Attendants, 3rd for Group.
At Sticker  Queen of Queens Contest it was another 3rd for Queen and 3rd for Group.
At Newquay Carnival they were elected Newquay Carnival Queen Group for 1985.
At Tregony Queen of Queens Contest it was 2nd for Queen, 1st for Attendants, 1st for Group.
At Tregony Carnival it was a clean sweep, 1st for Queen,  Group, and Queen’s Vehicle.
At St. Just in Roseland Carnival,  1st for Queen and 1st for Group in Car.

I reckon that was a brilliant year of success that has probably not been bettered, but if you know different please let me know as I love recording Grampound success stories.
