GRAMPOUND WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORT

May: Discussion regarding Resolutions for presentation at the A.G.M Royal Albert Hall took place, the main item being ‘The closure of Community Hospitals and the severe effect it had in rural areas’. After much serious attention to this and other important matters we then relaxed and enjoyed a social evening with buffet, quizzes etc.

June: After concluding our W.I. business we were given a very interesting talk entitled ‘The Merlin Project’ presented by Mr. Rex Trethewey, to which we responded most sympathetically.

The Royal Cornwall Show was a much talked about venue and it seemed so many of our friends really enjoyed the many attractions.

The main meeting for the W.I was that of the A.G.M, Royal Albert Hall, London. It was attended by over 5000 delegates 4 of whom, from St. Austell, Fowey and St. Stephens, represented this area. The ‘Closure of Community Hospitals’ resolution was duly put forward and a Government representative was there to explain the whys and wherefores and to reply to many pertinent questions put to him from the floor. Many other important items were brought forward such as Climate Change, Post Office Closures still continuing, updates on milk prices, Trafficking in Women and Children, Renewable Energy and so on, all so important and really not enough time allocated. The points resulting from the discussions will be forwarded to the relevant bodies.

Mr. Tony Christie closed the meeting with his rendering of ‘Show Me The Way To Amarilla’, we then all sang Jerusalem, Land of my Fathers and the National Anthem, which brought the conference to a most successful conclusion.

July: This month our Annual Garden Meeting was held at LILIAN’S home where we, after clearing the month’s business, relaxed, had a delicious buffet and thoroughly enjoyed her most generous hospitality.

The month concluded with the decision to enjoy a dinner at The Dolphin, our previous arrangement of a day in Padstow having to be cancelled due to the bad weather.

August: We always have a ‘free’ month this time of the year so all we have to concentrate on is the Carnival. We shall be having our homemade cakes stall and, for a change from bookselling, a White Elephant stall, as well as the raffle. It should be fun, as the Carnival always is, and we hope to see you all on a sunny 1 st September.

Have a Good Day!
