GRAMPOUND REVISITED

Soon after the turn of the 20 th century the TIDDY FAMILY, comprising EMILY, RICHARD, JOHN FRANCES, and BILL whose family home was “Bella Vista” (now “Penhayes”) Old Hill, Grampound, emigrated to beautiful New Zealand, whilst another brother Harold remained in England. Currently living in the North Island in the fine cities of Matamata and Auckland, the family maintains a quite marvellous relationship between all of its members. This was so apparent on Sunday the 17 th June when fourteen members arrived here in Grampound to enjoy visiting the places important to them.

At Creed the family ancestors graves were visited, and in the village houses associated with the family, “Bella Vista” in Old Hill and “Woodbine Villa” beyond the Town Hall in Fore Street were both seen.

It was a great pleasure to PAT and myself to entertain the party at our home for a couple of delightful hours - no, I don’t want you to thank that our entertaining consisted of singing and dancing to them, but clearly they did enjoy the tea of home made Cornish pasties, strawberry jam and clotted cream splits and saffron cake!

Taking leave of us they returned to Creed just in time to join the Service of Evensong being conducted there. Their day in Grampound I am sure ended on a real high, as thanks to MRS. STELLA THOMAS they were able to search the old Baptismal Register and discover the entry in respect of the Baptism of one of their ancestors, Miss Louie James, that took place in 1888. That was brilliant of you STELLA and I am sure your kind help to the family will be spoken of on the other side of the world many times. The friendly conversations that took place with other members of the evenings congregation would I know have given them very great pleasure, especially MRS. LILIAN WADES confirmation of other village residents connection with their family.

I was pleased also to learn of a small PAYNTER family connexion with the TIDDY family that occurred back in 1910 when a “Glee Party” took place at Creed and EMILY TIDDY sang duets with MISS F PAYNTER. Within the Paynter family at that time there were two Miss. F. Paynters - FREDA later to become Mrs. Ellis and FLODA who was to marry LESLIE MINERS. Which one was it? - sadly I shall never know although I can strongly suspect it was my Aunt Freda who I know had a fine contralto voice and sang throughout her life.

We loved our holiday in New Zealand just over 3 years ago when we had the pleasure of meeting with a very senior member of the family MRS. PIXIE DALE. Pixie wasn’t able to travel over on this trip but it was great to meet here in Grampound her sister FRANCES DALTON, NEIL DALTON and his wife JUDITH, ELIZABETH WILSON, JAN BARNES and her husband REX together with ANNE HOPKINS and husband KEVIN. The New Zealand travelling party was completed by Pixie Dales decedents BRUCE DALE and CLARE HITCHCOCK, also ROBYN HOGG from Wellington, New Zealand. WILLIAM TEMPERTON from Boscastle drove the mini-bus that brought the party to Grampound, and the gathering was completed by LOIS (nee Tiddy) POWELL and her husband STEVE. Some readers will remember the fine history of the Tiddy Family as told in articles provided by LOIS to the Grampound Times in some of our early editions.

It was a good day!
