REMEMBRANCE TIME

I am conscious that the majority of items that appear in your Grampound Times refer to things that have happened, either in the very distant or very recent past. Nobody in my generation however, will need me to explain how quickly time seems to pass, and how incredibly quickly events looked forward to in the future become the past! Each year as at this time I plan my participation for Carnival Day I have in mind that ‘Remembrance Day’ will soon be with us.

A few years ago Remembrance time lessened to public attention to some extent with recognised 11 th November Armistice Day events being observed, maybe for convenience, only on the Sunday nearest to the 11 th. I am personally pleased that we now seem to have returned to the full recognition of the importance of Remembrance Day, and that the actual date of 11 th November has returned to prominence. Here in Grampound your Parish Council has taken the lead by arranging a formal Poppy Day wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial plaque on the Town Hall. Support for this has grown steadily thanks to a large extent to the whole hearted support provided by the Head Teacher, Staff and students of our school.

The start of the 2 Minutes Silent Remembrance is in Grampound announced by the sounding of the wartime siren from a position by the Market Cross. The uncompromising sound wailing out across the village gives everyone notice of the opportunity to take part, even if they choose to do so from their own home. The increased national observance of the Remembrance period was I think emphasised last year when a clearly long distance lorry passing as the siren sounded, stopped by the roadside for the 2 minutes period.

The Parish Council and the Grampound School students will again this year proudly lay their wreaths of Red Poppys at 11am on the 11 th November.

It would be brilliant if you could join with us there at the Memorial for a few minutes, when we shall particularly remember the Grampound residents who made the supreme sacrifice of their lives in the two World Wars.
