New Member – Cllr. Donna Still decided not to stand for election in May, which was unfortunate for the Parish Council and the residents, because Donna has been a hardworking Councillor. T he professional manner in which she has chaired Planning Committee Meetings won particular praise from her fellow Councillors. She continues with her other interests, not least as Chairman of the Sports and Carnival Committee and we wish her well. Her replacement on the Council is Dr Dean Jenkins, who will already be well known to many of you. He and his family have come to live amongst us at Tremetherick. We look forward to working with Dean.
Fore Street Resurfacing – the resurfacing of Fore Street is now completed and certainly looks much better. An added bonus is that a “quieter” tarmac was used, which, it is claimed, makes the road less noisy. Only those living on Fore Street will know if this is true or not!
The Parish Council proposed a number of schemes to County Highways to reduce the amount of “clutter” (e.g. white line hatching, etc.) on the village’s main street. In the event, financial restraints prevented all of those proposals being implemented. Nevertheless, we hope that where we were successful, residents are pleased with the results – the hatching at the side of the road has disappeared and the double yellow lines have been reduced in width.
On the negative side the soil, which was used to replace grass verges damaged during the resurfacing process, turned out to be infested with bindweed. The Parish Council has successfully petitioned Highways and the worse areas have now been replaced with fresh soil and turfed. Only time will tell if we have seen the end of this pernicious weed.
Road Signage – the observant amongst you will have noticed that the street signs for Mill Lane and Pepo Lane have recently been replaced. This is as a result of the Parish Council working with Restormel Councillor Annette Egerton and we are grateful to Annette for her support with this matter.
On a related subject, residents drew attention to the road signage to Grampound. At the Probus/Trewithen roundabout it points to “Grampound, Grampound Road and St Austell”, but at the Grampound Road turnoff, it refers to St Austell only. They believe this leads to drivers looking for Grampound taking the wrong road and ending their journey in Grampound Road.
By coincidence a local farmer approached the Parish Council around the same time, to say that heavy lorries making deliveries to his farm, travelling from the Truro direction, have difficulty realising the junction at the top of Grampound Hill, as no signpost is in position. He has asked that a sign Mevagissey be posted.
Both requests were taken to County Highways and their response has been that the signage, in both cases, is “in accordance with County policy”. Sometimes the work of a Parish Councillor can be very frustrating!
Footpaths –
Fal River Footpath – regular walkers of this footpath will know that it has not been easy to walk the path for sometime, because of the tree felling activities on the Trewithen Estate. The Parish Council has been assured that work is nearly finished and the path will be cleared shortly.
Mill Lane to Trevillick Footpath – similarly, this footpath, too, has been blocked by debris from building work. However, the land owner has given a written undertaking to have the blockage removed .
Citizen’s Awards – the Parish Council were pleased to nominate Mr Joe Fryer for Restormel’s Good Citizen’s Award and Miss Laura Blayney for the Youth Award. Both, in their different ways, have worked hard for the village and its residents and are well deserved holders of the title.
Calor Cornwall Village of the Year Competition – the village has, once again, reached the Cornwall finals of this competition. By the time you read this report, the judges will have visited the village and we will know if we are one of the winners. Watch this space, as they say!
