Dear Readers, please join me in amazement at the great wealth of varied talent that currently abounds in this beautiful Parish of Grampound with Creed.
Some weeks ago I had reason to call and speak with JOHN DAWE at his Treswallen Bungalow home. He invited me inside and my eyes almost popped out of my head as there on a side table stood a truly incredible collection of trophies. Not a single small one in sight, but all big and grand, clearly representing someone’s very great effort and skill at something.
John was justifiably proud to tell me that his young daughter KATIE was the person who had amassed the huge collection of over 100 trophies - and only the most important were out for me to see!
KATIE races her “Ministox” car around the country in the National Formula Ministox Class in the 11 to 16 age group. Her success rate has been astonishing, and the sigh of relief from around the country could possibly be heard if one listened carefully from all of the mostly lads, but some lasses, who will now have a chance to win silverware in the new season as Katie moves up from the age group.
From my conversation with John and Katie I was able to learn a little more of her exploits. Locally she has raced at the St. Day, St. Columb and Taunton tracks where in each case she became their Track Champion. At the Taunton meeting she also won the Devon Championship which brought her probably the grandest of all her trophies. It’s big and beautiful!
As well as racing with great success in Cornwall and Somerset, Katie has also brought home the silver from Wimbledon in South West London, from Birmingham, from Eastbourne, from Ringwood, and probably the most notable of all her successes so far, from the Arena Essex, where in competition with over 60 other drivers, she became the first girl to win the Championship Final. Cumulatively her points won have also brought her the South Western Area Points Championship.
At the young age of just 16 Katie is not likely to take kindly to retiring from the excitement of the racing circuits, so what comes next? Having been shown the “Ministox” car that has carried her to her current successes - and a powerful little monster it looks with her name emblazoned across it, I was then taken to see the Formula 2 Stock Car that is sitting waiting for its next pilot, and by appearance that really does step up a grade and look a very potent motor! Will its next driver be Katie? We can but wait and see - if the answer is yes, then Treswallen Bungalow might need to be extended to cope with the many new trophies that will surely follow.
The final part of this story is not the proverbially sting in the tail, but rather an excellent opportunity for the right person or organisation wanting to obtain advertising by sponsoring a dead-cert success show.
KATIE DAWE is looking for, and certainly deserves a good sponsorship deal.
Anyone interested should contact father - that’s John Dawe, Treswallen Bungalow, Treswallen Farm, Grampound, Truro. Telephone 01726 882445. Incidentally I believe that the special “Ministox” car that has taken Katie to her successes is now available for sale - interested? - then John’s your man.
From all the readers of the Grampound Times Katie sincere Congratulations! are offered to you for all those exciting drives, and we don’t forget Dad for expertly keeping your car in tip-top condition. The very best of good luck to you in the future.
