MAY:
It was a very sad beginning to the May meeting when we learned of the death of our President MRS. ESME JARRETT. Esme, with her daughter HILARY VEAL, had joined our W.I but a few short years ago, been elected as President in 2005 and just been re-elected in 2006 as President, and in this very short space of time she had endeared herself to all our members - we shall miss Esme very much. Our deepest sympathy goes out to her daughter and family.
The general business then took place, i.e. discussion and agreement to the Resolutions to be presented at the A.G.M at Cardiff in June, along with other items to be resolved. Our meeting ended on a very quiet note.
JUNE:
Before the meeting proper took place a new President had to be elected and the vote resulted as follows:
President - MRS. HILARY VEAL
Vice President - MRS. PAT PAYNTER
Secretary: - MRS. JOY ROWE
Treasurer - MRS. STELLA JULEFF
The election of our Officers was followed by the election of our full Committee.
The newly elected President thanked everyone for their kindness and said she wished to present a Presidents W.I. brooch to the Group in memory of her mother, ESME. This lovely gesture was much appreciated by all the members.
Cardiff International Arena was the venue for this year’s A.G.M attended by more than 4000 W.I. members. The two Resolutions put forward, that of ‘Renewable Energy etc.’ and ‘Sport for a Healthy Population’, were voted 95% and 97% in support and these proposals will be forwarded to the appropriate bodies for their attention and action.
The guest speaker, the Secretary of State for International Development was warmly applauded for his clear and interesting presentation on all that aid to developing countries entails.
June is always a busy month with the many and various outings in which to participate. Many of us also visited the Royal Cornwall Show and thoroughly enjoyed all it had to offer. We hope you did too.
But back to basics, after all the above matters were discussed etc., we settled down to a surprisingly entertaining talk by Mr. R. Poad, covering the grocery trade from 1927 to 1940 - how times have changed!
The meeting ended with a delightful buffet.
JULY:
This is the Garden Meeting month, held this year at the home of MRS. LILIAN WADE. A hamper will be raffled, a Bring-an-buy table available and the pleasure of a tempting buffet - this is always a very happy social occasion where we relax and enjoy the event and each others company.
AUGUST:
We consider this month to be ‘holiday time’ (no business) but we have booked an outing to Wheal Martyn Museum, a tour of the area and complete the time spent there with most welcome refreshments.
SEPTEMBER:
It just remains for us all to enjoy the Carnival. We shall have our stall of home made cakes, etc., a super raffle as well as lots of books for sale.
So it’s fingers crossed for a lovely day. Have fun.
Regards from the W.I. members, and see you there!
BETTY MURDOCH.
