Time on Your Hands

Readers of “The Grampound Times” will know of my appreciation of poems - perhaps simple ones that often carry a down to earth message, and rhyme……..here’s one that I read recently in a national daily newspaper, that had been offered by John Hyde of Chellaston, Derby.

TIME ON YOUR HANDS

What happens to the time we save by cooking in a microwave?
More time gained to watch TV? All this ‘time-saving’ baffles me.

Granular tea for an instant brew, more time saved – now what to do?
Just add milk for an instant whip, that’s two more minutes – have a kip!

Frozen puddings, veg and cakes, just how little time it takes
To get a meal prepared and eaten – is there some record to be beaten?

Fast food outlets, takeaways, all saving minutes, even days!
Instant mixes, packet sauce, more precious seconds saved, of course.

Foil TV dinners, soon oven-heated, in no time at all you’re seated,
Before that square, cathode chat stopper, rather than the dining room proper.

“Instant” custard, boil- in- the- bag, all designed to relieve the drag,
Now there are no spoons to lick, food is bought because it’s quick.

Soup-in-a-cup, chocolate drinks, produced, it seems, in just two winks,
Poor Mrs. Beaton’s fading fast, are recipe books a thing of the past?

Eventually, at this present rate, soon all there’ll be there on the plate,
Three coloured tablets; green, blue and red, main course, dessert and off to bed.
