The Grampound Times

As a retired Scout Leader, ( although I have always had it instilled in me that once a scout always a scout, ) I was particularly pleased to be invited to attend the Guides Promise evening. This is such an important time for the new Guides as living to their Guide Promise is a challenge that should be with them for the rest of their lives. The 1 st Grampound Guides must surely be the quietest group of girls in existence as when the time to state their Promise came, and listening as intently as I possibly could, I heard not a word. The smiling, contented faces of their Leaders standing facing them told the proper story however, the job was done! Two of the girls taking part that evening were KEZIAH DAVIES and LUCY PEARCE and my thanks to them for writing to tell us about their experience:

1st GRAMPOUND GUIDES PROMISE EVENING

On Friday the 23 rd June the reformed Grampound Guides held their Promise Evening. Altogether there were 18 of us and we paraded in front of our Leaders in three groups. Each group has a name and these were “Penguin”, “Elephant” and “Dolphin”. We all took it in turn to say our Promise the words of which are:

I PROMISE I WILL DO MY BEST,
TO LOVE MY GOD,
TO SERVE THE QUEEN AND MY COUNTRY,
TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE,
AND TO KEEP THE GUIDE LAW.

After this we each received a badge and our Guide Membership certificate.

We had invited many guests to our special evening, most importantly our families, but also past Grampound Guides and Scout and Cub Leaders who live in our village. After the Promise ceremony we served tea, coffee and cream cakes to our guests, after which we sang some old camp fire favourites to them like ‘Found a Peanut’, ‘Nobody Loves Me’, ‘Pizza Hut’ and ‘My Ship Sails from China’. After that we cleared up and went home.
