Dear Roger,
I’ve tried to email you twice without success – don’t know why, so I am writing a letter instead.
We have recently returned from a week’s camping near Bath. Whilst having a cider in The Wagon & Horses at nearby Peasedown St. John we met a Grampound man called PHIL EVANS, who was delighted to hear news of his birthplace while living away from home. We reminisced about all sorts of places - Croggon’s Tannery, Articumbye, Barteliver, Probus, Creed etc. and also found that we had common links to Gwennap and even Pink Moor near there. He mentioned the names DAVIES, GOODMAN and KEN BAWDEN and he lived at 3 Broadhurst from the 1940’s and then at 4 Newhill Estate in Grampound. Apparently he used to do odd jobs for Mrs. Croggon when he was a boy and also worked at Barteliver. He could name all the residents up the street.
Incidentally he said there was a Tiddy from Grampound buried at Creed in the late 1950’s. I can’t place him, though I should be able to! Can you help me there? Perhaps one of your readers might know?
I photocopied a few pages of the last “Grampound Times” and sent them to him. I hope that is OK with you. He may contact you for further editions as I copied the Editorial page. We had hoped (now we are retired) to be in Grampound for the Carnival on 2 nd September, but it’s our daughter’s “Hen Do”, so it will have to be another year. We hope all the community events will be well supported and the weather kind for the Carnival.
I enclose a donation for the “Grampound Times”.
Best Wishes,
LOIS POWELL (TIDDY)
A really nice letter to have received thank you Lois, and I guess a few comments are called for from me.
Thank you for your continued support of the magazine by donation. Sorry that we shall not see you here for Carnival. I live in hope that Carnival time will attract some of our ‘distant family’ back home for a day – but as you say perhaps another year.
The answer to my email address sadly is that for sometime now I haven’t had one, but I hope to resolve in the near future and will let you know it separately.
As I am sure you are aware our local specialist on archives etc. is PAUL BREWER. And he tells me that in 1951 an addition to the family memorial at Creed recorded the death of WILLIAM GEORGE TIDDY on the 10 th January. There was no interment at Creed however, as the death occurred in New Zealand. I feel sure you will already know of that, but unless any reader of this paper knows differently that is the only help I can give.

Dear Roger,
Thank you for continuing to send me copies of the “Grampound Times”. Each is read from cover to cover!! I enclose a cheque to help with Production and Distribution costs.
I do not come down to Cornwall very often now. Carole lives in Chislehurst (S.E. London) and Andrew at Cheltenham, but both lead fairly busy lives so I only see them occasionally but they are well as are Carole’s family.
I keep in pretty good health and try to take a daily walk across a part of Bristol’s Clifton and Durdham Downs which are literally on my doorstep; in fact looking out of my lounge window I cannot see another house, but across acres of well maintained grass. A 15 minute walk takes me to the top of the Avon Gorge with a wonderful view of Brunel’s famous Suspension Bridge.
Thank you again Roger for producing such a wonderful “Grampound Times” and sending me a copy each time and a ‘Thank You’ too to your helpers.
Wishing you continuing success and regards to you family.
Yours sincerely,
RICHARD.
Great to receive your letter Richard and I am sure that the folk who know you will be pleased to learn that you are keeping well and your family. Thank you very much for the extremely generous donation you sent. It will help ensure that the “G.T” continues to drop through your letter box periodically, and I hope you continue to enjoy it.
Roger
