After just a few weeks off, pre-season training began on 4 th July in the middle of the World Cup and, friendly matches permitting, will have taken place every Tuesday and Thursday until about Carnival by which time league matches proper will have begun. The friendly fixtures have again been very attractive and have included matches against senior clubs that should prove a stern test. Our final friendly match has now become a bit of a tradition as the reserves play the first team on the Friday evening before Carnival Day. For those who like their football red-blooded this is one not to miss as all players are out to impress! We are indebted once again to Keith Cotterill who has provided another series of interesting and very demanding pre-season training evenings. As well as meeting the first team manager’s instruction that he has the fittest team in the league, through his coaching Keith has developed the way our teams play and the hours spent on drills of all types will bring rewards in the long season to come.

Last season was a little disappointing for the first team who underachieved considerably. Manager and regular players would concede that far too many points were dropped unnecessarily and the lack of a natural goalscorer made many games a battle when the team deserved to have won comfortably. This season, the first team’s problems in front of goal may be eased by the re-signing of a fit-again Andrew Webb and there is the possibility of another good striker signing for the club. The reserves, though, finished in a very respectable league position and, in spite of a crippling run in at the end of the season where 7 games were played in only 23 days, performed in a very committed and determined manner. We look to some of the youngsters involved to build upon their hard work of last season and press for regular starting places and eventual promotion to the first team. We particularly welcome back goalkeeper Harry Cooke who missed all last season when he broke his leg in a pre-season friendly.
