GRAMPOUND CARNIVAL - Chair's Report to 2009 AGM

I would like to start by saying “Thank You” to the rest of the Committee.   Everyone has worked hard over the past year and it’s because of that hard work that we had a great Carnival.

It’s been a very busy year, always fundraising is what helps to pay for the bands, children’s entertainers and trophies that we provide each year.  All the way back in February we held a Quiz, March was particularly eventful as we held a male voice choir evening which the playground fund also benefited from.   Our Easter Egg hunt and competitions went very well, both adults and children taking part.   We also held a bingo in March.
In May we decided to do something different and held a garage sale and invited others to do the same.   It worked really well.
June was our biggest event, the auction, and Paul and Shelly were very kind in letting us use the pub, and although there were not as many people as in previous years, it was still a very good night.
July brought the annual mCar Treasure Hunt.
August, we had a little breather, just to get ready for Carnival week which included a bingo, a quiz, the children’s sports, rounders and bbq, and the famous pig race.

Carnival Day, we had some problems because of the amount of rain.   The field got soggy but we couldn’t let that stop us, so we had to rearrange the layout and make the most out of a bad situation.   Unfortunately we did lose out on some of our demonstrations, bouncy castle and children’s rides that were booked, but which for safety reasons could not go ahead.   Despite the rain we had a fantastic number of entries and supporters  -  well done to all.

Our chosen charity for Carnival 2008 was The Precious Lives Appeal and it was very pleasing to be able to hand over a cheque for £300.
I would like to thank  CRAIG and  JANEY from  AUSSIE MARQUEES  for their generous support over the years in providing cover for the bar and band and this year was fantastic, it worked really well.

Thanks also to  PHILLIP  and  LISA  TSE for a generous donation that helped us purchase a new gazebo.

TONY DAVIES is a great help to us when it comes to the street bunting and lights in the marquee, as is  PHILLIP MANNELL.

JOE FRYER  provides great help in setting up the Carnival Day bar and  PHIL a butcher from Lobbs Farm Shop provides and cooks the hog roast.
These are all jobs that would be incredibly hard to do if we did not have the help of these people.   Many thanks!

To finish I would like to say  “Well done!” to all those who took part in the Christmas Lights Competition.   It really does make Grampound look lovely.   Winners of the competition as judged by you were
Best domestic Window           -           JACK & PAT MARKS
Best House & Garden             -           ROGER & PAT PAYNTER
Best Business                         -           EASTERN PROMISE

Thank you to all who have helped in any way and for supporting the Committee over the past 12 months.
