It is with much regret that I advise I have received no report for this issue in respect of our CHURCH SUNDAY CLUB but I know the club continues to prosper.
Other than the ‘Good News’ arrival in the Parish of our new Team Rector I have no other CHURCH NEWS to offer at this time, so forgive me for including this glance over my shoulder.(Ed.)
For many years the Christmas Service at St. Nun’s of Nine Lessons and Carols was conducted to ‘full houses’ but of more recent times this has sadly not been the case.
For the 2007 Christmas Service a real effort was made to make the Service more attractive. Everyone I have spoken to thought that the illuminated Christmas Trees displayed by village organisations, namely “The Grampound Times, Grampound Football Club, The Sunday Club, The Women’s Institute, Grampound Guides and Rainbows Company and the Bowling Club, helped to greatly enhance the spirit of Christmas, and was an idea worth repeating in the future. Traditionally the Lessons are read by persons representing village organisations and the Carols sung were more the ‘old favourites’ rather than more adventurous other music. This year our organist DAVID SCHOLAR made a real effort in this regard and one time favourite ‘While Shepherds Watched’ sung to the tune Lingham was again included. I remember in past years the ‘men’s verse’ was sung heartily - this past year it would have been a bit thin if left to men alone - but maybe next year……….
We are grateful to the Probus Team Choir for joining with us for the Service. This year their ‘solo’ items were deliberately a little restricted which I felt made their contribution to the general singing of greater benefit. There was always in the past a special spot in the Service for the children, another aspect that I am sure everyone will wish to see continue.
Christmas 2008 seems a long way away, but to persons in my age group it will soon be here, and rest assured the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols will be with us again. I hope very much we shall all meet there!
