Our W.I. year commenced with a complete upheaval as we were requested to vacate and completely clear within a week the room we have occupied in the Town Hall for more than 20 years, to make way for the very much needed regeneration and refurbishment of this old building, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Then it was all hands on deck to not only decide where all the paraphernalia of our occupancy over these many years should be housed, but who had the space to store all our furnishings. However, it was accomplished within the time limit - phew! In the meantime we had to hastily book our monthly meetings in the Village Hall and inform our forthcoming speakers of the new venue. They will of course be received with the same warm hospitality always extended to our visitors.
JANUARY: The first meeting in our new venue went smoothly with all business items discussed and concluded our speakers, Mr. & Mrs. Evenden, were duly welcomed. Their subject was “The Arctic” with slides and film of their visits to this bare and freezing part of the world. One can only say how truly remarkable the filming was, especially of the close-ups of the beautiful polar bears. Great stuff!
FEBRUARY: Cold and wet but that did not dampen our spirits. All our correspondence etc. was attended to as well as deciding to hold our birthday dinner at the Dolphin this year. We then introduced Mr. Manuell who spoke most eloquently on behalf of “Victim Support”, a charity which brings to the fore the many things that need to be addressed. A very interesting and certainly an extremely thought-provoking subject.
MARCH: This is our General Meeting when we nominate our President, Secretary and Treasurer, as well as the forthcoming committee members to cover the next 12 months from May 2008 to April 2009. All this activity makes it quite a long evening but we always manage to socialise by relaxing and enjoying our buffet.
Also during this month there are many events to be considered and enjoyed including Gardeners Question Time at Probus, a day out at Newton Abbot Races, a visit to Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and also many local events to attend during the Springtime.
APRIL: Always a month to lift the spirits and we know we shall enjoy our speaker this month, Mrs. Mina Dresser, on the interesting subject of “Experiences of a Diplomatic Life”. M This should raise quite a few questions!
This month too, is when the Hall for Cornwall is full of W.I representatives from all over the County taking part in the “Spring Countdown”, to absorb the annual budget etc., as well as to air their views for Resolutions to be presented at the National A.G.M. There are, of course, many other interesting items to put forward and always a guest speaker. This year it is the Rt. Hon. Ann Widdecombe, M.P., talking about her life as a politician, author and broadcaster; a lady who pulls no punches when it comes to straight talking.
Our programme for the coming year of May 2008 to April 2009 is now complete and as well as looking forward to the many events available, we also hope to be able to again use the Town Hall for our meetings but, as the saying goes, we shall have to wait and see.
In the meantime we have the Summer to look forward to, culminating as always in the Carnival. We hope to see you there.
Happy days from all the W.I. members.
