As I write the final pages of this Grampound Times
It is with sadness that I learn of the death of

MR. ERNEST SYDNEY ROWE.

Having spent most of his life here in Grampound
Ernie moved with his wife Jenny a few short years ago
To Falmouth in order to be nearer to their Daughter and her family.

He never lost his feelings for Grampound however, and returned to support
Many village events and remained an avid reader of this village magazine.

Ernie passed away after a period of illness on the 5th March 2008.
His Funeral Service was held in the Falmouth Methodist Church on Thursday 13th March 2008 at 2.30pm. Interment followed at Falmouth Cemetery.

It seems incredible to me that a full year has elapsed since I told you of the Award of the Gwen Dawe Memorial Salver, an award that is made annually within the Grampound Women’s Institute to the member recording the most success over the 12 months in the monthly competitions.

This years declaration revealed a most unusual situation with two members accruing the same number of competition points. The result is therefore, that each winner will hold the Salver for 6 months!

CONGRATULATIONS

MRS. STELLA JULEFF & MRS. PAT PAYNTER.

Last year I told you of the motor racing exploits of MISS KATIE DAWE of Treswallen Farm and included a picture of some of the magnificent trophies she had won. I happened recently to be within hearing of a little bird who told “There’s more!”

Currently taking a rest from the motoring circuits KATIE is now weaving her magic in the circle of ladies football in Cornwall. Playing the centre of mid-field or sometimes on the wing she is a playing member of the Truro College Team and also the Penzance Ladies Football Club, the team currently top of the South Western Premier League and Cornwall Under 18’s team who are having one of their best seasons ever. The extent of her footballing commitments leaves no time at present for car racing but once the soccer season is over she will be back inside the car testing the F2. Motor racing is of course a very expensive pastime and sponsors are desperately needed to finance a full seasons racing - is anyone listening - Katie's Dad JOHN DAWE would love to hear from you!

Witnessing the quite severe weather we have had in these early days of March has reminded me of the 8th March fifty years ago when amongst other things it snowed heavily. Why should that have stuck so vividly in my mind? It was our Wedding Day. Not too many Brides fathers have to saw up trees that have fallen in the storm across the road they need to use, and delivering Rural Postmen had a little more time allowed on their daily rounds then and were therefore, able to lend a hand shovelling snow so that the Brides car could leave home! Needless to say our Wedding Service at St. Mewan Church went ahead as arranged, although sadly a few of our family guests living in the area of Bodmin Moor just could not get through the snow.

It seems a little embarrassing for me to record “Congratulations” here because I am congratulating myself and my fantastic good fortune whereas PAT just got me! I will let you into one of our little secrets. A few days ago when particularly exasperated with the ‘little untidiness’ I sometimes cause in our home, Pat said “I am not sure I can put up with you for another 50 years”. I quickly assured her that it was unlikely that she would have to.
Well I hope really she was joking because for the last 50 years life for us has been brilliant and we both look to the future with love.

Whilst on the subject of Good News! I hope everyone in the Grampound and Creed area is aware of the excellent (and inexpensive) lunches being provided for Senior Citizens every Wednesday by PAUL JELBERT, Mine Host at “The Dolphin Inn”. There are invariably five main courses to choose from, followed by a desert - incredible I think for just over a fiver!

You will have seen elsewhere in this paper that PAUL with his partner SHELLY have become a welcoming team for other organisations in the village, particularly the Carnival Committee, the Football Club and yes, I know that the ladies of the Women’s Institute greatly enjoyed their meal to celebrate the Institutes Birthday recently. The Football Club have a particular reason to appreciate the couple, as immediately on their arrival here they agreed to become Club Sponsors. PAUL has very generously provided the Club with a complete new playing kit and this was featured in a January edition of The Packet Newspaper. Our Club Chairman ALLAN WEBB joined Paul for the publicity photograph and afterwards said “We are very grateful to Paul Jelbert, for continuing the sponsorship we have had for some years now and this new set of kit is the fourth that the pub has supplied to us. Not only is the Dolphin Inn our main kit sponsor, it also provides great food and hospitality for our teams and their visitors after games and we look forward to continuing our relationship”
