DIGITAL TV

The Government policy to change our television system will render many of our appliances useless or in need of help very soon. The change to ‘digital’ is being staggered around the United Kingdom - but guess which part of the country is to be the guinea pig area - yes, you’ve got it its Cornwall. I’ve never yet mastered the video recorder properly; yes, I can record programmes by pressing the ‘Record’ button but have never mastered the task of setting things up to happen sometime later! Now, when digital comes into full use I am told I will only be able to record the programme I am watching on my old system. The real answer of course is to spend and invest in new digital equipment. Which reminds me that prior to the last issue I received a letter from SHANE PERRY from Probus who is in the business and was looking to tell you about his services - sadly in the late rush to get things to the printer I misfiled his letter so it didn’t happen. Now I have been beaten to it by the Cornish Guardian!

Householders across the county are being warned not to be ripped off by rogue traders during the period leading up to the digital switchover next year. Digital UK, an independent not-for-profit organisation (I wonder!) has teamed up with Cornwall County Council Trading Standards and the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary to encourage folk who believe they may need help, new aerials etc., to consult and use those in the business who carry the magic three letters on their headed paper R.D.I that means Registered Digital Installer.

SHANE PERRY tells me that after completing a 10 week Course at Exeter College he is now a qualified registered installer. He went on to explain that to get the qualification it is necessary to demonstrate a high standard in everything you do, and this includes the work you do, the materials you use and of course not to forget the modern day favourite matter of health and safety. How did we ever survive in earlier years before somebody invented that! They should all lead to customer satisfaction, which every business aims to achieve. Shane has only recently entered into the business of self-employment but has the excellent background of having worked in the Aerial and Satellite industry for over 22 years. He is currently in the process of registering with the Confederation of Aerial Industries and on the successful completion of his training is entitled to display “The Pink Digital Tick” which will be seen as a must to us when we seek help in this matter.

With apologies to Shane for not including his advertisement in the last issue of “Grampound Times” I am very pleased that it has been included in this 47th edition. Good luck with your business Shane, I am sure I shall be calling upon you soon!
