Nearly all enclosed and substantially enclosed public places and work places in the country will become smoke free. Why not all - and just who will be exempted, you might feel is a reasonable question to ask. Well the information passed to me for printing came from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly NHS Stop Smoking Service, but if you would like to know who and where will be left outside of this new law don’t ask them! They have no idea at this time.
Smokefree has already been introduced in Scotland from March 2006; Wales joins the party from the 2 nd April 2007 and Northern Ireland on 30 th April 2007.
The legislation will include offices, factories, shops, pubs, bars, public transport and work vehicles used by more than one person. It will also mean that indoor smoking rooms will no longer be allowed, so anyone wishing to smoke will have to go outside. If an outdoor smoking area is provided it will be required to conform to regulations and planning authority, and whilst most people will comply, those who do not may be liable to a fine or prosecution.
The introduction of smoke free environments will provide healthier places for employees and customers alike, protecting them from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
Here is another “Did You Know?”
Smoking is the principal avoidable cause of premature death in Cornwall, killing about 1500 people per year
that’s quite a terrible statistic isn’t it!
