The Grampound Times

More from the Editor

Each new edition of ‘The Grampound Times’ circulates far and wide keeping interested folk, wherever they reside, in touch with how we are getting on here in the ancient township. In addition to the copies that are posted to addresses around England it has readers in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and although we know that Ms. Browne who used to reside at her family home “Lancreed” in Creed Lane reads the ‘G.T’ off the world wide web via the internet, how many others do the same can only be wondered at.

I recently received a most interesting letter from MS. DOROTHY MADDEN living in Northern Ireland (many thanks for your kind comments about the “G.T” Ms. Madden and of course your most generous donation towards our costs) and she sent me two treasures, both of which I hope to be able to share with you within the pages of this 44 th edition.

The first item is a photograph , which I hope to be able to reproduce for you, and is of a former citizen of Grampound, who incidentally I well remember seeing taking his daily constitutional walk in his retiring years. The photograph shows him resplendent in his military uniform of the Boer War period, which interestingly includes the inverted horseshoe in gold braid confirming his trade as a farrier. Serving as he did in the Boer War in South Africa, and again in the 1st World War 1914-1918, horses were of very great importance to the British Army

Can you name him? If you can tell me his name it will bring you a prize!

The second ‘treasure’ is a copy of the “Old Cornwall Society Publication dated Autumn 1965” and this amazingly contained an article about life in our Parish written by the Revd. Anthony Moore who was Curate here in 1753! I hope to include this work, or at least extracts from it, as I know it will interest many of you.
