A few years ago I spoke with CLARICE WESTLAKE following the publication of her book of poetry and told her of ‘The Grampound Times’. It was a pleasant conversation during which Mrs. Westlake gave me permission to print any of her poems for you to enjoy. This 44 th edition of our magazine will be with you early April as will the Easter period. The following poem which I have taken from her book “WITH RHYME AND REASON” is particularly appropriate for the season and is entitled
EASTER DAY
It’s Easter Day and choirs are singing
‘Christ the Lord is risen today’
In the belfry bell’s are ringing
Listen now, hear what they say
Pain is over, sorrow banished
Lenten grief all washed away
Now’s the time for celebration
Oh! Happy, happy Easter Day
Easter eggs in brilliant boxes
By loving parents stored away
White-iced cakes with yellow chicks on
Have all been waiting for this day
Little faces wrapped in chocolate
Little fingers bathed in goo
Offer half chewed bits of sweetie
“Here you are Mum that’s for you”
Mummy, with a moved expression
Accepts the offer with great glee
“Thank you darling that was lovely
I think I‘ll keep it for my tea“!
It’s Easter Day and joy is bubbling
All around, so plain to see
The faithful say, “My Lord as risen”
The hopeful think ‘please let it be’
Let nothing spoil this Easter pleasure
Let love and laughter have their way
Choirs, keep singing, bells keep ringing
Oh! Happy Happy Easter Day!
