The Grampound Times

Grampound Bowling Club

I would like to open by thanking Ron Hicks for his contribution to the earlier magazines. Ron and Jean celebrated their Golden Wedding on 26 January. Despite Jean being unwell they provided a warm welcome at Polman House to many friends and relations on the day. I am privileged to have attended their wedding day and 50 th anniversary and to be a friend to one of the nicest people around.

Shortmat bowls continues at our clubhouse on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 - 9pm. Anyone interested in joining or sampling the game should contact our secretary Clarence Juleff.

The Club held its annual dinner at The Pier House, Charlestown on Sunday 7th January. Approximately 40 members and guests enjoyed a very pleasant, informal evening with plenty of good food and company. Ivor and Jill Jago were invited guests. Ivor was president of the outdoor Cornwall Bowling Association 2006 [men’s section]. After making some very complimentary remarks about our Club and its history Ivor presented trophies to our 2006 competition winners. The evening was well organised by Elspeth Summers - thank you Elspeth.

Our Spring General Meeting took place at the clubhouse on 6 February. We celebrate our 80 th year this forthcoming season and have arranged games with representatives from both the Cornwall Bowling Association and our
Central Division colleagues. The green opens on Saturday 14 April at 2pm. It is hoped that Cliff Webb will be able to attend and formally start our special year.

A coffee morning is being held at the clubhouse on Saturday 12 May from
10am to 12.30. All are welcome. This provides an ideal opportunity to meet some of our members and ask questions about our club and the game.

We plan to renew the fence between the green and the children’s play area before the start of the season. There is also much work to do to prepare the green for the forthcoming season the bulk of which is done by club members. We are very fortunate in this respect.

Our club has two men’s teams in the Cornwall Central Division and a strong ladies section entering various county competitions. New members, particularly anyone from the village, will be made very welcome. It is a good social sport and not expensive after an initial outlay for bowls and shoes. Second-hand bowls are available from dealers at around £50. Our club will loan bowls if anyone wishes to ‘try before you buy’. We have qualified coaches to help introduce you to the game.
