In the last “Grampound Times” I was able to confirm that the Parish Council was recommending to the Mayor of Restormel a young person be awarded the title YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR but the wording of the citation was not available to me at the time. Now it is, so I print it here for you to see….
LAURA BLAYNEY , aged 13, has at her young age already given more to the community than many do in a lifetime. A glance at her involvement across a wide range of activities makes one wonder where she finds time to fit them all in and still achieve consistently high standards in her school work. The answer must be dedication, motivation and boundless energy.
The Churches in Grampound benefit from her support in many ways. Her musical talent is much in evidence when she plays the saxophone and recorder at St. Nun’s and Creed churches. In addition, she helps at the Sunday Club in St. Nuns, being an excellent role model for the younger children and having attended regularly since its inception. Laura supports the Church also by taking part each year in a sponsored walk visiting churches to raise money for the Cornwall Historic Churches Trust and her local churches.
Her help with the 1 st Grampound Rainbows is a great inspiration. She has graduated herself from the Rainbows to become a Patrol Leader at 1 st Grampound Guides. Nothing is too much trouble for Laura. At the Remembrance Day Service, she was the first to volunteer to read a poem. The two weekly commitments to Guides and Rainbows are carried out with never failing regularity and she is well respected by the young Rainbows, her peers and the adult leaders. In between, she finds time to appear in Probus Pantomime, this year winning the Junior Commitment Award. Laura’s acting talent is matched by her musical ability and she is a member of The Roseland School Concert Band, maintaining her high standards through conscientious practice.
Laura supports many events in Grampound, from Carnival Quiz Nights to the Church Fete. Every Carnival Day sees her in costume in the parade. She was also active in raising money for Tsunami appeal. The lives of the community in Grampound are enhanced by Laura’s commitment. She does all this, while ensuring the well being of her family, in particular by helping her mother in times of ill health.
Laura Blayney is an outstanding young lady and thoroughly deserves this award.
